Health is a choice, not a chance.

As a Chiropractor and a curious amateur researcher, I listen and watch how the average person approaches health. I’ve observed that most people go about their lives without any sort of ‘how-to-live-a-healthy-life’ instruction booklet. Rather than being proactive, most people are waiting around until something interrupts their life before taking action.

Most people are motivated by pain. This comes in so many forms: back, shoulder, arm, knee, ankle pain. Headaches, high blood pressure, auto-immune issues, thyroid dysfunction, gallbladder pain, and so much more.

I see this in my practice and I see it in society. My entire practice is based on people coming in when something goes wrong, then, once that symptom is relieved, they go on about their business.

I’ve observed that most people feel that, just because they don’t have a cold or flu, that they’re healthy. Our society has been acculturated to believe that, if there are no obvious symptoms, then everything is fine. One can eat and drink, think and do whatever feels pleasing in the moment. More often than not, most people don’t find any relationship between what they put into their body and how they feel.

I’m here to share with you that EVERYTHING matters. Every thought, movement (or lack of), morsel of food, drop of liquid impacts your biology and physiology.

Generally speaking, our entire society is malnourished, not from the lack of quantity of food, but because the lack of nutrients. On top of that, most people are eating grains, carbs and sugars that are nutrient poor and calorie rich that lead to inflammation. That lack of nutrients leads to organ, muscle and nerve dysfunction. Your body can’t build without the proper nutrients.

Whatever your genetics, environment, or history, at any time, you have the choice to turn your health around. You get to choose what you eat, what you think, what you drink and how you move.

You have the freedom to choose whether you’ll snack on grapes or potato chips. One of these is full of nutrients, life force and anti-oxidants, while the other contributes to inflammation and empty calories that may trick you into thinking that you’re full, while there are zero nutrients in there to support growth and repair of your cellular structure. And you know from basic biology that cells are the building blocks of your body.

So, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise when ligaments, muscles, and organs aren’t able to do their jobs when one reaches 40, 50, 60 years old if one’s diet primarily consists of fast food, chips, sugary snacks and drinks. There’s nothing to repair the damage from life’s stressors.

As we end this year and move into the new one, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on what choices you’re making.

Are you in control of your thoughts? Are they thoughts that help move you into a positive future? Or, are your thoughts keeping you stuck in trauma loops from the past? Are these thoughts depleting you of energy and contributing to stress and health issues?

Are you mindful of what you eat and drink? Are you choosing foods and drinks that heal, nourish and calm your body?

Are you moving? Are you taking time, everyday to stretch, move in ways that delight you and build strength and vitality?

Remember that you are your own best healer. Your health isn’t destined by ‘outside’ forces. Every minute of every day, you are the captain of your destiny. You choose what you think, eat, drink and do.

You choose who you spend your time with, what sort of health care team you choose to work with, what you watch and read, and how you spend your free time.

My parting words for you as we transition from 2021……

This year isn’t ending wrapped up in a neat little bow so that we can start afresh. I think we like to do that at the end of the year. ‘Out with the old, in with the new’.

Instead, we’re going into a new year with more uncertainty.

I feel this, and at the same time, I’m looking forward to the challenges that this year will bring. Every moment offers up opportunity for ‘do-overs’.

Whether we’re sure about what’s next or not, we all have the opportunity to face what’s next with a new energy. We can choose to meet life head-on or we can meekly walk through life, waiting with apprehension about what might come at us, unprepared.

I’d like to invite you to take time every day to set yourself for what’s ahead. Choose to start and end your days with energy that overcome those feelings that take you down.

I love that saying ‘Choose life’. It represents a commitment to show up whole-heartedly. When you commit to whatever’s in front of you, you find the ways to get through the blocks and to find victory.

Can you commit yourself to YOU?

As always, sending you a warm embrace from New Mexico and sending you off into a new year with my hope for the best, healthiest, and most vital version of you!
