Breath.

It’s your life force. It’s the foundation for all of your healing and regeneration. It can give you energy, health and joy…….ooooorrrrrr it can rattle your foundation and take you down a dark path of health issues. 

Take a second. Tune into yourself. Where is your breath now? Are you feeling like your breath is suspended? Are you holding it in? Out? 

What is your breath rate? Is it quick and ragged? Slow and deep? 

Can you hold your breath in for more than 10 seconds? Can you hold it out for more than 10 seconds? 

The reason I’m asking you to tune in, is that your breath is literally your everything. Without it, you have life for just a few minutes. When breathing is dysregulated, it changes your oxygen levels, your heart rate, whether your cells are able to heal, repair and grow. It affects your nervous system either positively or negatively. In the negative direction, it can lead to anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, behavioral issues, and loss of nutrients. (I’ll dive more deeply into all of this at the end of the summer).

My Challenge to You

 
Right now, take a very slow, long quiet breath in. If you’ve got a stopwatch available, take a count of how slowly you can inhale. 

Do the same for your exhale. Let your breath release long, slowly, and quietly and count the time.

Ideally, to start, you want to make sure that you can inhale and exhale comfortably for 10 seconds on each. 

Practice this twice a day for at least 5 minutes. 

I’ve been doing this for the last 6 weeks and it’s literally changing my life. I’ve had undiagnosed sleep apnea, for probably most of my life, but it’s worsened over the last 9 years and has caused havoc with my health. The change in breathing (and I’ve got more to share at a later time!) has improved my sleep, my energy, my thought processes, and my joie de vivre!
